Hops are Good for You
by Bill Friday
(2000 - From the THC Club Non-Newsletter)
Just wanted to pass on a news bit I read in the August 28, 2000 issue of Time magazine. It seems that "researchers have discovered that the hops in beer contain potent antioxidants known as flavonoids. These free-radical fighters were already known to be present in red wine, but it seems beer might be an even better source." They go on to say that one would have to drink "hundreds of pints daily" to achieve maximum health benefits."
I am guessing that these researchers are thinking about the normal hop levels that are in such American beers such as Budweiser. But wait! One could draw a wild conclusion that someone drinking the highly hopped beers as Three Floyd's Alpha King, Bell's Two Hearted, or Lafayette Brewing Company's Old 85 would not have to drink as many to obtain health benefits. Maybe as little as twelve a day. This is a possibility.
Finally, something extremely useful. It needs more investigation. I want it been known, if more research is needed, I will personally volunteer our club to be in the sample pool to drink super hopped beers. (Don't get your hopes up. Unfortunately, scientists are talking about developing a pill.)
